Studious helps connect teachers and students of all levels. We are particularly excited about helping high school and college-level musicians start teaching by providing a space to pair beginning teachers with beginning students.

The Team
Don Atkins, founder of Studious, is a classically-trained pianist and former piano teacher with a passion for bringing people together around music and the arts. A graduate of Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s of Music in piano performance and a composition minor, Don also studied on a Fulbright in Vienna, Austria. Don received his MBA from the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business.
Joni Chan, marketing strategist for Studious, is a performer and teacher who believes that music education is for all. She aspires to make online learning experiences more accessible to a wider range of music teachers and students. She earned a doctorate in piano performance from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Dr. Chan is currently an MBA candidate at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business.
Why Studious?
Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, music teachers were losing students while parents and kids were struggling as schools shut down. Studious came out of this time as a way to help teachers, parents, and students address these challenges with what we know to be the deep reservoir of strength and joy that is music.

Don's journey in music began with group piano lessons at a community center at the age of five. After years of study, he started his own private piano studio during high school, and subbed for other teachers during college. The years he spent teaching were hugely important to his own development as a musician.
